The Course
Statistical Reasoning is a fourth mathematics course option for students who have completed Algebra II, Advanced Algebra, Accelerated Geometry B/Algebra II, or Accelerated Analytic Geometry B/Advanced Algebra. This course provides experiences in statistics beyond the CCGPS sequence of courses, offering students opportunities to strengthen their understanding of the statistical method of inquiry and statistical simulations. Students will formulate statistical questions to be answered using data, will design and implement a plan to collect the appropriate data, will select appropriate graphical and numerical methods for data analysis, and will interpret their results to make connections with the initial question. The course offers student activities in a range of applied contexts and helps students develop college and career readiness skills such as collaborating, conducting research, and making presentations.
UNIT

August 23
Unit II
Qualitative Data Analysis
September 20
Unit III
Quantitative Data Analysis

Grade Procedure
Paulding County School System Grading policy will be used and is as follows:
Grading Categories Letter Grades
Summative Assessments 57% 90 – 100 A
Formative Assessment 23% 80 – 89 B
Final Exam 20% 70 – 79 C
69 and below F
Notebooks and supplies
Each student is expected to keep a math notebook. A 3-ring binder is suggested. Success in this course is based on the ability to take good class notes. Since there is no textbook for this course, class notes are essential. Index cards are also encouraged. A thumb drive will be needed when we go to the computer lab.
Calculators
The preferred calculator for this course is the TI-84 Plus graphing calculator but a TI-30XS will be enough. There is not a class set of calculators in the class, but the school does rent them. Please ask Mr. Wilcox for a handout about renting through the school, if desired.
Make-Up Work
If a student is absent, it is his/her responsibility to learn, obtain, and complete the work missed. The student should confer with the teacher and other students in the class for any missed assignments. Any missed assignments will be put into the gradebook as a zero until the student makes up the assignment.
Quizzes
Quizzes will be given at the discretion of the teacher and may be unannounced. Quizzes count as a formative grade. All work must be shown for full credit.
Tests
Unit tests are subject to change but will be announced at least one week prior to the test date. If you miss the test, you will receive a zero in the grade book until you can make it up. All tests must be made up before the next unit test. If they are not, you will earn a zero. If a student is in attendance on the day of the test, the student is expected to take the test. All work must be shown for full credit.
Retakes
A student has the opportunity to retake all failing unit tests to bring the grade UP TO a 70. In order to retake an exam, the student must (1) come in for tutoring for test corrections, (2) rework the review sheet, and (3) schedule a time before or after school to retake it. Once during the semester, the student can choose to retake an exam for full credit. The student must follow the same procedure as any retake but the student needs to communicate this fact BEFORE starting the new exam.
Cheating
If a student is found cheating on any written work, a grade of zero will be given. This grade cannot be made up under any circumstances. The student will also be referred to an administrator for disciplinary action.
Tardies
Students are expected to be in class, seated and ready for class to begin when the last bell rings. Tardies to class will be dealt with as stated in the Student handbook.
Classroom Expectations
Extra Credit
There is NO extra credit offered. You must choose and accept responsibility for your own learning. Take good notes, pay attention in class, do your classwork and homework, and get extra help if you do not understand a concept. Mathematics builds on previous knowledge. If you do not understand the beginning concepts, you will most likely struggle towards the end of the semester.
Help Sessions
Tutoring may be available in the mornings or afternoons to any student who feels the need for extra help. However, if a student is not utilizing class time wisely, the request for extra help may be denied.

Classroom Expectations
- Be respectful. Keep hands, feet, objects, and inappropriate comments to yourself.
- Be on time and come to class prepared. Bring paper, pencil, homework, binder and calculator every day.
- Stay focused and on task. Every student is expected to participate in all activities the entire class period.
- No food, snacks, or drinks are allowed in the classroom. Bottled water is permitted.
- No cell phones or other electronic devices may be used during class unless the teacher has given permission.

Tutoring may be available in the mornings or afternoons to any student who feels the need for extra help. However, if a student is not utilizing class time wisely, the request for extra help may be denied.
- It is the student’s responsibility to schedule a time with the teacher for tutoring. Never assume the teacher will be available. Please see me at least a day in advance.
- Come to tutoring sessions prepared. Bring specific problems and questions with you.
- Schedule help when the need arises. Never wait until the last minute to prepare for a test. It is impossible to reteach an entire unit in one tutoring session. Remember, there are no miracles on test day.
