Course Overview:
Geometry is the second course in a sequence of three required high school courses designed to ensure career and college readiness. The course represents a discrete study of geometry with correlated statistics applications.
Course Outline:
This course will consist of the following 6 units:
- Transformations in the Coordinate Plane
- Similarity, Congruence, and Proofs
- Right Triangle Trigonometry
- Circles and Volume
- Geometric and Algebraic Connections
- Applications of Probability
- 3 Ring Binder
- TI-30 XS MultiView, TI-36X Pro Calculator (approx. $12 - $15), or TI-84 (cell phone calculators will not suffice)
- Spiral or Composition Notebook
- Loose-leaf paper
- Graph paper
- Pencils
- Dry Erase Markers
- Homework will be assessed at the teacher’s discretion using a variety of methods for completion and/or accuracy. This is a math class, there will be homework.
- Credit for accuracy will not be awarded unless it is evident the student made an effort to model the concepts and examples from the notes/class work.
- The student MUST show the steps used and not just an answer (as modeled in class).
Tests/Quizzes:
- Absolutely NO PHONES accessible during quizzes or tests
- Quizzes and tests will be given throughout each unit to assess learning.
- There will be no sharing of calculators on quizzes and tests. If you wish to use a calculator, you must bring your own (you may not use your cell phone calculator)
- Talking during quizzes and tests constitutes cheating. Use of cell phones during quizzes and tests constitutes cheating. You WILL RECEIVE A ZERO!
- Semester grades consist of the following:
29% Formative (quizzes/warm-ups/graded homework)
Informal (daily assessments/daily homework)
Mathematics Department Mastery Plan:
- Students have the opportunity to retake a summative assessment on which they score below a 70. The highest score that can be earned on the retest is 70. Students must schedule retests with the teacher within one week of the original assessment being given back. Retests must be completed before the next summative assessment. Prior to taking the retest, students must complete a remediation process as determined by the teacher.
Notebook and Binder:
- It is imperative each student keep an organized notebook.
- Students must keep all unit tasks, unit packets, homework, class work, warm-ups, quizzes, and tests in a binder.
- If you are absent, it is your responsibility to get notes from a classmate to copy.
Tutoring: Tutoring is offered Tuesdays 8-8:20am and Wednesdays from 3:30-4pm. Additional tutoring times are offered by other math teachers, and can be found on the NPHS website or posted outside my door.
- Tutoring is intended to supplement classroom instruction, not replace it. Students must participate in class to take advantage of tutoring time. As such, please come to help sessions prepared with specific questions or material on which to work.
- I am willing to assist any student who feels the need for extra help. However, if a student is not utilizing tutoring time wisely, then the student will be asked to leave.
Make-Up Work:
- Make up work is the responsibility of the student. I will NOT remind you!
- Make up work will not be completed during class. It is the student’s responsibility to schedule a time for make-up tests and quizzes with teacher.
- A student who is absent on review/study guide days will still be expected to take the test in class as scheduled. If absent on the day of an assessment, the student will be expected to take it immediately upon returning to class. Any prolonged absences will be addressed individually.
End-Of-Course Test:
- The Geometry EOCT is a state-mandated test which counts as 20% of the overall class average.
